This post was written by me as a paid partner of Purex® Laundry Detergent. However, all opinions are 100% my own.

Doing laundry is a necessity in all households. And it’s no secret that many families are constantly on the lookout for new ideas on how to save money on laundry costs.

As a family that has had to be extremely frugal to pay off almost $68K in debt, we know the delicate balance between saving every penny and buying affordable products that don’t skimp on quality. Since we’re always searching for that perfect balance between quality and affordability, we made the switch to Purex® Laundry Detergent plus implemented the tips below to help reduce our laundry costs.

How to Save Money on Laundry Tips & Tricks

1. Wash with cold water

One of the easiest ways to save money on laundry is to wash with cold water. With a traditional hot water heater, you can expect to spend about $1.20/day based on an average usage of 3-5 hours per day according to Direct Energy. That may not sound like a lot, but over a year, that can add up. In addition to direct cost savings, using cold water can help preserve the life and vibrancy of your clothes.

Purex® Laundry Detergent is the brand our family uses for a quality clean at an affordable price. Purex ® Advanced Oxi Plus Coldwater Power Liquid Laundry Detergent does a great job at cleaning even our dirtiest loads and I can still run a cold water cycle knowing the detergent fights 99% of common stains!

2. Line dry clothes

According to EngerySage.com, it costs the average household a little over $5.50/month in electricity to use their dryer. When you add that up over a one year span, that’s more than $65 in spending. Switching to line drying your clothes saves money, increases the life of your garments, and it’s better for the environment.

3. Know your detergent formula

If you have a High Efficiency (HE) washing machine, make sure you use the correct detergent. HE washing machines are, as the name implies, more efficient than your standard machine and use less water. If you use regular detergent in an HE washing machine, you’ll likely create too many suds and make it nearly impossible to remove all soap residue.

The good news is that all liquid Purex® Laundry Detergents are compatible with both High Efficiency (HE) and standard washers! So you can pick the right Purex® Laundry Detergent that’s best for you and your family without having to worry about it not working with your High Efficiency (HE) washer.

4. Use laundry bags

Using a laundry bag is a great way to protect delicate items. A laundry bag also reduces pilling and stretching, making it a perfect solution for extending the life of your favorite garments. If you don’t have a laundry bag handy, you can use a zippered pillowcase instead.

5. Choose affordable, quality detergent

As we mentioned in the introduction, finding a detergent that strikes that perfect balance between affordability and quality is a necessity to a successful laundry system.

Purex® 150oz Mountain Breeze® Liquid Laundry Detergent and Purex® 150oz Free & Clear Liquid Laundry Detergent are my personal favorites which cost up to 50% less than the leading detergent based on average price per load. We made the switch to Purex® Laundry Detergent because it’s a dependable clean at an affordable price

6. Don’t over dry clothes

As mentioned above, line drying your clothes is a cost saving, environmentally friendly way to dry laundry. However, that may not be a feasible option for everyone. If you do use a dryer, it’s important to not over dry your clothing and linens. Excessively running your dryer not only costs more in electricity, it also shortens your clothing’s lifespan and dulls colors.

7. Stop doing laundry every day

Many households have 1-2 small loads of laundry going each day. Rather than running small, frequent loads, consider batching the process and designating one day per week to do laundry to ensure you’re running full loads – but always be mindful not to overfill the loads either. In the end, you’ll save time and money plus of course you can multitask other household chores during the laundry cycles.

8. Fix worn garments

Mending clothes is a habit of frugal living. Too often we throw things out when an item is starting to show wear. Learning how to mend socks, reattach buttons, and reinforce seams saves your household money in the long run. You don’t have to be a homemaker to make this tip work for you. There are so many free tutorials online that will show you exactly how to mend worn out clothing with very little skill required.

Conclusion on How to Save Money on Laundry

If you don’t take anything else away from this article, we recommend that you evaluate your current laundry system and look for money saving avenues to help stretch your hard earned dollar. Applying the tips from above plus finding a quality clean with Purex® Laundry Detergent gives our family the clean we need at the price we want.

You can grab Purex® Laundry Detergent products at Walmart, value stores such as Family Dollar and Dollar General, grocery stores such as Kroger and Publix, Walgreens, Target, and even on Amazon.

There are people that do laundry every day? That’s crazy. Clothes can be worn more than once.

I always look at the environmental consequences of my laundry detergent purchases. I’m currently using the laundry sheets and haven’t noticed that my clothes are any less clean and there is definitely less waste.
